I Tatti
Research Fellowships at
Villa I Tatti
for Eastern/Central European Countries
Application
Deadline April 15
For
scholars from Eastern/Central Europe and from the Baltic and Balkan States
I Tatti offers two Research Fellowships of three months for advanced
research on any aspect of the Italian Renaissance. They replace the
Mellon Research Fellowships, which were awarded between 1994 and 2009.
Applicants must hold a Ph.D. at the time of application, but should
still be in the early stages
of their career, which may be defined, by an approximate rule of thumb,
as the first decade after the doctorate. Preference is given to projects
which break new ground beyond the applicant’s doctoral dissertation.
The I Tatti Research Fellowship carries an award of $5,000 per month,
plus a one-time supplement towards transportation expenses. When
possible, a small apartment will be set aside for the Fellow’s use, rent
free, but with charges for telephone, internet connection, and
utilities. When it is not possible to provide an apartment, a
supplement of $1,500 per month will be offered as a contribution towards
rent. The Fellowship cannot be held for less than two months or more
than three; part of the third month can be pro-rated. Candidates should
indicate a preference for one of the following time slots, together with
a second choice, if possible: (1) September to mid-December; (2) January
to March; and (3) April to June. The Fellowship cannot be held in July
or August, or over the Christmas holiday. Fellows will enjoy all the
privileges of the Harvard Center, including use of the Biblioteca
Berenson seven days a week and lunch with the I Tatti Appointees from
Monday through Friday. I Tatti Research Fellows do not receive an
office or study, but are invited to work in the Library itself. One of
the goals of I Tatti is to establish an intellectual community in which
a fruitful interchange of ideas can take place. Fellows are thus
expected to spend at least two or three days a week at the Villa.

Candidates,
who will be considered on the basis of their scholarly excellence and
promise, must have a project of intellectual importance centered on the
Italian Renaissance that is suitable to the resources of I Tatti and
Florence. Fellows are required to devote full time to their projects
and may not have other obligations, such as teaching, during the period
of their Research Fellowship.
Applications
and the supporting material should arrive before the firm deadline of
April 15.
Renewals or
repeats of an I Tatti Research Fellowship are not granted.
