The Berenson Lectures
at I Tatti:
Friendship, trust and
fidelity
in Renaissance Florence
Dale Kent
(University of California, Riverside)
13 March:
Framing
Friendship
This lecture
will consider how classical, Christian, and civic cultures shaped Florentine
practice and perceptions of friendship, trust, and the language of love.
15 March:
Making Friends
This lecture will explore how, where, and why Florentines formed friendships,
and represented these associations in actions, images and words.
20 March:
“Test your friend a hundred times before you trust him”
The title is a quotation from Giovanni Morelli’s Ricordi, epitomizing what
has been called the “agonistic” nature of Florentine society. This lecture
will look at groups of friends in moments of crisis or trial, in which
friendships were tested, proved, failed or endured.
